As I walked into one of my favorite gift shops, I noticed the sign: "20% off for teachers with a badge." My children had some incredible teachers at our new co-op this year, and I wanted to make sure they felt appreciated with a nice end-of-year gift. As I wandered around the store checking out blankets and jewelry, candles and coasters, I tried to imagine what each of these sweet ladies would enjoy. They had poured into my kiddos and made little (if any) money for their efforts. I also wondered if the store would let a homeschool mom take advantage of the teacher sale. So, I just asked, and they said yes!! When I walked out an hour later, all the teacher gifts had been checked off my to-do list, and I had saved a good bit of money.
Speaking of discounts, I've been collecting sales from curriculum companies as I've gotten emails about them, and I'm sharing them all with you below!
Hereβs what's new this week...
π Fresh Picks
βHow Explode the Code Lines Up with All About Reading - I have previously written about how I combine these in my homeschool (see next article), but this is a much deeper comparison along with my detailed recommendations for how the lessons and levels best align.
βSupplementing All About Reading with Explode the Code - This is the first article I wrote a few years ago, introducing how I utilize Explode the Code as supplementary workbooks for the All About Reading program.
βWhen Is It Enough? Wrapping Up the Year - Every year most of the mothers I know worry about this.
π§° Teaching Tools
Here are a few things we are going to try for the first time this fall... So, I have no "review" yet to give you.
βMemorizing Mnemonics for the United States Geography from She Teaches Littles on TPT - I'm a huge fan of mnemonic devices for memory work and am excited to use these next year with my kiddos.
βPurposeful Design Spelling Plus - I have been desperate to find a spelling program for my oldest that he can do mostly independently. I've tried several, and while I absolutely do not blame them for my lack of consistency, I have continued to search for one that would be more practical for us and still include deep phonics instruction for my older readers. We are going to try this next year, and I will keep you posted!
π On My Bookshelf
βMr Putter and Tabby* by Cynthia Rylant - I saw this series recommended somewhere and decided to borrow one from the library for my youngest to read. She is a beginning reader who has just taken off this year. It was the cutest little story about a lonely old man and his adopted "Tabby" cat. I plan to borrow more in the series for her to read.
βTreasure Hunters: Quest for the City of Gold* by James Patterson - I can't remember where I saw this one mentioned either, but I borrowed it from the library and started reading it to my kids this morning. They already love it!! If you can stand pre-teen humor, obnoxious jokes, etc., you might enjoy reading it aloud to your kids too. I'm hoping we learn something about Central America in the meantime!
βMercy Watson series* by Kate DiCamillo - My kids and I all enjoyed this adorable series that is equally funny and endearing. Mercy is a pig who lives with Mr. and Mrs. Watson. Her adventurous interactions with the other characters who live in the neighborhood amused all of us.
