The end of the school year cannot come soon enough in my house. The kids are tired, and the sighs are frequent. I'm tired and soooo ready to be done. But how can we know when we are "finished"? Well, first of all YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FINISH EVERY TEXTBOOK! Seriously - ask any teacher friend you have if they always complete every lesson of every book. They don't. (I'm a former teacher just FYI).
If you are nearing the end of the year, you could just stop and start back in the fall where you left off. If you are determined to get to a good stopping point or to "finish" up everything first, you can actually look ahead and skip some lessons. Even in math. Check out the next level that you plan to use with your kid and you will see that they usually start with review. So, use that to your advantage. Skip lessons that you find unnecessary, cover important lessons briefly (for real, we are skipping lots of practice problems at this point). Just know - you can review in the fall.
Hereβs what's new this week...
π Fresh Picks
βStory of the World Volume 1 - NEW Expanded Edition - I just finished writing this article, and although I still need to add some images to it, etc. I wanted to go ahead and share this with you because I'm so excited about it! (I just wish she had already created the new edition for Volume 3, since that's what we are going to start in the Fall.)
βThe Truths About Homeschool "Failures" No One Tells You - In keeping with the theme of my words above about ending the school year, this article by my friend Lissa Tussey should be an encouragement for those who haven't read it yet. She graciously wrote this as a guest post for me a few months ago.
π§° Teaching Tools
Math "Facts That Stick" - This series of books by Kate Snow is great for review of Addition*, Subtraction*, Multiplication*, or Division*. If you need something game-based to keep your kids up to speed this summer, check out this series.
βStudies Weekly - A friend of mine who is also a former teacher recommended this Social Studies and Science curriculum to me. She has used the Social Studies with her elementary-age kids and loves it. They have online and/or print options.
π On My Bookshelf
If you're looking for an encouraging read...
βWild and Free* - This is going back on my night stand soon. I was so encouraged by it several years ago & really need to reread it.
βHomeschool Bravely* - This one is short and so sweet. Faith-based, but the relief it provides to help with the doubts of "am I doing enough?" should apply to anyone.
βReading Magic* - This book is so inspiring about the benefits to kids as we simply read aloud to them. I am hoping to be better about reading aloud with my kiddos this summer!
