This week my 2nd grader and I worked on a project for his multi-cultural fair at our co-op. His assigned country was Morocco, and as we spent time researching, printing, coloring, etc. I was so delighted to see the joy and pride he took in his work. It was also just really sweet to spend special time with my "middle-man." So, in honor of his Moroccan project, here are some Geography resources I've found...
π Fresh Picks
Stack the States App - A friend recommended this app to me. It's only $2.99 at the time of writing, and seems like an easy (and fun) way for students to learn the 50 States. It's available on both Google Play and Apple. We are going to be doing US History and Geography next year (with Claritas Cycle 3 and Story of the World Vol. 3), so I plan to pull this app out for my kiddos to practice.
Story of the World Maps - The SOTW curriculum includes map work, and I have enjoyed using them with my kids this year. They're included in the Activity Book, which I consider more of a "teacher's guide." You can copy directly from this book for use in your home, or you can purchase a separate Student Pages book for each of your kids. Most of the chapters include map pages that correlate to the particular topic of that chapter; and they only take a few minutes to do.
π§° Teaching Tools
βKumon World or US Geography - The best part of these (IMO) is the stickers!! I used them a while back with my oldest and have recently been considering them for my younger kids at his recommendation. The activities include a combination of coloring, stickers, etc. all focused on the geography of the country.
βDraw the World* - My kids and I used this book last week to draw the world, and it was really cool! We spent a couple of days drawing the outlines of the continents. I am absolutely going to be purchasing more of this series*. I appreciated how clearly each new step is shown and explained. I also plan to have them redo this book at least once more soon so we can compare our first and second attempts.
π On My Bookshelf
βChemistories* - I received this book this week and have started reading it myself. I love the concept behind it, of the elements being alive and able to talk, having personalities, etc. And the really awesome thing is it was written by a seventh grader!
βThe Amazing Chemistry in Your Home* - This one also arrived recently and is a great fit for the ages of my kids. It's full of pictures and short texts. I'm loving it for next year's science!!
βInteractive History Adventures* - This series of books has been a hit with my 4th grader recently. I originally purchased one about the Middle Ages*, and he loved it so much I grabbed a few more that go along with some of our studies. I've linked to the Oregon Trail book here just to keep it in the same vein as the geography books listed above, and I plan to purchase this one for our US history studies next year. (BTW, I'm linking to Amazon, but you may be able to find these used through sites like BetterWorldBooks, etc.) Beware people frequently die in these books - often in terrible (but historically accurate?) ways.
βTuttle Twins Choose Your Consequence Combo* - This set of stories is similar to the ones above, but with a focus on economics. I think this series probably leans a little older than the Interactive set above. My son enjoyed them (and I think we have just a few of them), but he hasn't torn through them quite as eagerly as the others.
