We took five boxes of books to Goodwill the other day, only for me to later realize I could have tried to sell them to the used book store near us. Ugh! Oh well...at least I got them out of my house to make room for more books. Because our needs have changed. My kids are all reading different levels of chapter books and, of course, they all have unique interests.
I have spent hours this past week searching for books for my kids to read independently. I've been searching blogs, FB groups, etc. and then comparing against my library, Amazon, used book resources, etc. Here are some of the things I've found...
📝 Fresh Picks
I don't especially love reading children's books - I would rather read my own books. I'm sure some parents will be appalled at sentiment, but I'm just being honest with you. Those who enjoy reading children's literature and are willing to share their thoughts are my heroes.
Here are some of the resources I've found. I'm always on the lookout for books that steer clear of certain themes and agendas that we don't want our kids indoctrinated with. So, it has been helpful to find places to get ideas. Like any area of life, every family has their own preferences, so some of the resources are more "restrictive" than I am. Nevertheless, I appreciate the heads-up on any and all potential concerns so that I can determine whether it's appropriate for my kiddos.
RaconteurPress.com - They seem to focus on science fiction adventure books for boys.
BigBooksLittleEars.com - This lady is a Christian and a self-proclaimed "picky mom" who will tell you everything she thinks might be "questionable" in the kids' books she reviews.
ReadAloudRevival - Sarah McKenzie offers booklists for various ages and interests. You can also check out her RAR membership for more.
JesusLovesBookworms - This site's tagline is "Streamlined reviews from a Christian perspective—to help parents protect and mentor their young readers."

📚 On My Bookshelf
These are a few that were hits for my kids this week...
Ranger in Time series* - My 10-year-old son is loving these historical fiction books. I found a few at a used book store, but you may also find them in your library.
The Good Dog series* - I'd never heard of these before, but my 8-year-old son is loving the series so far. I ended up buying the set that is linked here for him, but there are more books in the series.
The Adventures of Sophie Mouse series* - My 6-year-old daughter has recently taken off with reading and is very excited about this series. I bought the one I linked here for her.
