This summer break has had its share of "adventures" already...We started out with a fun trip to the beach with extended family, and then last week ended up with a fresh round of some fever virus that went through all five of us over nine days.
In between these, we have managed to grab some rest, time with friends, and some fun learning experiences as well. I have absolutely loved the moments of quiet relaxation we've snagged where we get to read something together, or independently (now that all my kids can read!!), or doing a fun activity (more on these below). And don't forget to check out my question at the end and reply! I love hearing from you!
π Fresh Picks
βState Quarters Collection* - This week we finally sat down and went through all the quarters in my kids' "piggy banks" to find state quarters to fill our new chart. I paid each of them back in dollars or "plain" quarters just to keep things "fair." But we managed to find 17 state quarters in the first round! And as I'm writing this, I'm remembering the math kit I set up for our Math with Confidence curriculum. I should get the kids to help me comb through those coins.
βOnly In Your State - If you are looking for stories and other interesting facts about any or all of the 50 states, check out this website and choose your state of choice. You can even select to receive a daily newsletter with links to articles about your chosen state. For instance, I got this article about Alabama's hidden treasure this week.
βKiwi Crates* - We have had subscriptions to KiwiCo off and on for years, so each of my kids has had a turn to get a subscription for about a year. They get so excited when it arrives in the mail, and I love the fact they get to learn and experiment without me having to think up, figure out, gather supplies, and explain instructions. (Well, depending on the age of the kid, they sometimes need help.) This summer I've bought a few more crates to let each of my kids have one. My 10-year-old is loving building the mega hand (see video here). Some of the crates can be purchased individually and others are only available through the subscriptions.
π§° Teaching Tools
βAmerica's History Volume 3* - What happened after the American Revolution. We haven't received this book yet, but it is available now for pre-order. In the meantime, we have been enjoying reading (and listening to) the America's History volume 1 and plan to continue with volume 2 once we finish this one. The story format is interesting enough that my 6-year-old is able to follow along. Sometimes we read the side-facts and other times we skip them and just focus on the storyline.
βOregon Trail Choose Your Own Adventure Series* - My 10-year-old has been enjoying this series. He seems to really enjoy reading the various adventure paths, until he finally completes the "mission."
βAnt Factory* - We ordered this a while back but had to wait to order the ants until after we returned from the beach. They finally arrived yesterday and my kiddos have loved watching them dig tunnels and carry the sand around. However, several of them were already dead (and there are others I can't tel if they are dead or not). So, I kind of wish I had purchased two sets like I considered.
π On My Bookshelf
βBots and Bods* - I purchased this book through a KiwiCo kit* order. I haven't added on the book ever before, but wanted to try it out. My son has loved reading it! (Just beware that this particular book, which is included in the Tinker Crate for 9-12-year-olds, mentions the basic terminology for male and female gametes in it).
