We've been working on dictionary skills - specifically alphabetizing and guide words. In the midst of this, I pulled out my dictionary & thesaurus (a combined volume) and used it to show my third grader where guide words were found, and to give some hands-on experience with using a dictionary. He enjoyed looking at it and flipping through, reading some of the words. A few days later I picked up a used copy of a children's dictionary with pictures and a more child-friendly layout. Excited to show it to him, I handed it over. But within a few minutes he emphatically told me he preferred the original one!!! So much for trying to simplify things...sometimes kids really just enjoy the "real thing."

🧰 Teaching Tools
Kiwi Crates* - My kids have LOVED using Kiwi Crates through the years to enjoy hands-on science experiments. They come with everything you need to complete the project (except occasionally a basic like water).
All About Plasma- I knew next to nothing about plasma as a state of matter prior to watching this video with my kids. We'll be saving this YouTube channel for future science learning!
📚 On My Bookshelf
Wallace and Grace Mysteries* - Got a book from this series for my first grader, but my third grader is enjoying it as well. Now I'm on the hunt for more from our library. (There appear to be four in the series.)
Mercy Watson series* - I absolutely love this little series of beginner chapter books. We have the original 6 books, but I see that there are now books 7 and 8, which are going in my Amazon cart. Mercy, her family and neighbors and all their shenanigans are really hilariously adorable.
James Herriot Treasury for Children* - I apologize if you're tired of hearing about this one. I just had to update you...we finished it and were sad to reach the end. It is a new family favorite. One of my kids picked it up this week to read to himself, and we all love it so much I looked for more stories by him, but the rest appear to be for adults. I was so sad, but I may end up reading one of his adult storybooks both for my own enjoyment and to see if it's appropriate for my late elementary kids.
