I had my week all planned out...I had perfectly aligned my daughter's dance camp with her brother's sports camp so that I'd get four mornings "to myself" while they all danced and fished to their hearts' content. I was going to get blog posts written and curriculum prepped, and maybe grab lunch with a friend or two. And then life happened...by the end of the week I had gotten exactly one morning "to myself" out of five. Between sickness and tired kids who needed a break, I didn't get my break, and then I got a sinus infection. Needless to say, last week didn't go my way. But that is really how so much of life is, esp. when you throw homeschooling into the mix! We roll with the punches, pray for patience, and enjoy the chaos.
Hereβs what's new this week...
π Fresh Picks
A mix of posts, freebies, products, strategies, factoids, and even non-homeschool items.
βKids Art Frame with Storage* - I bought a similar "storage frame" years ago for my mom, but always wanted to get one for each of my kids to hang on the wall here. My sweet artists love to give me their masterpieces, but I don't have a great place to display and then store soooo many things. So, I purchased one for each and then I can proudly display all of their newest creations and have a safe place to keep all (ahem....at least some) of them.
βAll About Reading Amazon Supply List* - If you are looking for supplies for the All About Reading setup I use, I just created a list on my new Amazon Storefront. I hope this makes it easier for people, rather than having to click through each link from the blog article. Just remember - if you click my links, I might get a little commission from Amazon for sending you.
π§° Teaching Tools
Practical teaching resources
βLanguage Smarts Level B - I've been looking for a supplement for my rising 1st grader who is already reading (it's not me, it's her!)...and this book includes a variety of language arts skills, including some "advanced concepts." It's supposed to arrive later today, so I'll have to let you know my thoughts next week. I do like a lot of the books from this company, and I loved that this one was colorful and fun looking, while teaching a variety of language arts skills. If you want to print it yourself (esp. if you have other kids who will use it down the road), you can get the ebook directly from the publisher. She's my youngest, so I felt like it was cheaper to just buy the printed version and use that. (You can also find this series at RainbowResource, Amazon* etc.)
βBasic Phonics Skills D* - This book has been in my teaching library since I taught 3rd grade, so I busted it out to use with my first grader. She did a few pages yesterday, just for fun, and really enjoyed them. I have the ebook (avl from the publisher) and just printed out pages as I needed them in the past. This series* has levels A-D. They are also available from RainbowResource, ChristianBook, etc. Currently the cheapest price I see is the paperback book on CarsonDellosa.com (and while you're there, check out their Sale page).
βExplode the Code* - I have used this series with all three of my kids as a supplement to AAR. The books are fun and often funny, and allow my kids to do some independent written work to reinforce what they have learned in AAR. I created a book by book lineup of ETC and AAR. ETC is also available from other retailers, such as RainbowResource, Christianbook.
π On My Bookshelf
For you, your kids, or read-alouds.
βSophie Mouse* - This is a series that I just recently discovered for my daughter. They were recommended by some of the parents in a FB group I follow, and she seems to have enjoyed the one(s) she's read so far.
βJames Herriot's Treasure for Children - I just ordered this one after the recommendation from a YouTuber I follow (Science Mama). She gave such a glowing recommendation, I bought it to have in our home library.
β¨ Just for Fun
This one made me laugh...
